Game Mechanics Post- I've recently been playing a lot of Rust, a survival game. Basic premise is that you wake up naked on the beach of an isolated island with a rock and a torch, and you need to survive. Though, against the typical mold of survival games, the main things that pose an issue to you are the other players. A community of, well, sociopaths has been brought up, and you need to either team up with others or leg it far enough from everyone else to avoid being bothered. If you don't do this, or think you have but end up being mistaken, you will be killed mercilessly, and all of your progress destroyed or assimilated into another players. Players roam the map, armed to the teeth, simply wanting to kill everyone in their path. And, after playing for a while, I can see why. Its a self perpetuating cycle. You get killed over and over and over again, and once you finally build yourself up, you do the same, killing without mercy or remorse. But its not all about killing for fun, these social mechanics interact with survival ones as well. Sometimes, you need to pick up your stone ax, and beat the life out of someone, wither it be for meat or items. And because of this, you need to have better weapons and armor, to defend yourself from attackers, and to defend yourself from the defenders. Generous players are few and far between, not just because of the inert hatred of anyone who hasn't proven themselves to you, but because its just plain difficult. Supplies are hard to find, and you have bullets you need to make, guns to repair, and bases to build. So, its just easier to put a bullet into the guys head then giving him the wood he is asking for, because its my wood, I chopped it down, go get your own. But, if they had made this game single player, it would be way too easy. Supplies is everywhere, its getting to it before someone else does, and getting back to safety before someone decides your skull would look very nice on a spike outside of their base, that's the difficult bit. Also, the idea to have a massive, loud, unkillable helicopter that has machine guns and rocket launchers fly around at night rather then the zombies they had in the beta was a really, really good idea, because no matter how far along you are, that thing is terrifying.
